Ceramics with Hilary
Monday 10th Sept 9.30am - 1.30pm
or Tuesday 11th Sept 6.00-9.30pm
plus firing for all on Saturday 15th Sept, 9.30am until lunch time.
£60 including materials and firing
We'll be using the kiln built in the garden to smoke-fire pots made in the classes during NEOS this year. To get the most impressive marks from the smoke and organic materials loaded into the kiln, our forms will need to be smooth and beautifully burnished, so we'll stick to simple hand-built shapes of pebbles that feel lovely to hold in the hand.
The hollow pebbles will be bisque-fired, and we'll wrap them in organic matter such as seaweed, grasses, leaves, vegetable skins, rusty nails and parcels of 'magic dust' to break and sprinkle over the pots as the kiln heats.

or Thurs 13th Sept 6.00 - 8.00pm
£30 including paper and ink dipping pens
Inspired by the lovely garden at Heckleburn and the summer spent with an acclaimed American botanical artist, Mel will be leading two drawing sessions, outside if the weather is fine or inside with materials from nature. Having recently fullfilled a lifelong dream to keep bees, there will be a choice of garden beasties or vegetation to choose from.
After exploring a number of drawing techniques and after a few warm up exercises - work will move towards a clear study. Good quality cartridge paper, ink and dipping pens will be provided, but if you would prefer, you are welcome to bring cold pressed, ready stretched paper brushes and watercolour paint or pencils.

Learn the ancient technique of coiling to make a beautiful small basket using plant fibres gathered from the garden and hedgerows.
Coiling is an ancient technique, versatile and easy to do at home on your own. It uses the same principle as coiling pots with clay but the core is flexible fibre and stitched together. We shall be using various dried grasses, leaves and rushes. If you have materials that you wish to use then please do bring them along.
